In Memoriam

About

Over the course of the last couple of years, we have lost some notable participants in the RUA Celebrity Golf Classic.  They will be missed and we hope that we carry on their legacies well.

Kenny Easley

Kenny Easley was a Hall of Famer, a Seattle Seahawks legend, and a founding supporter of Rise Up Academy. From the very beginning, he believed in the mission and made the school’s first donation when it opened in 1999.

For 26 years, Kenny hosted the Rise Up Academy Celebrity Golf Classic, using his platform to help create opportunity for children from underserved communities. His legacy lives on through the students he supported and the future campus that will proudly carry his name.

Lee Elder

Lee Elder was not only a pioneer in the game of golf, but he was an inspiration to so many young men and women of color not only through his play, but also through his commitment to education and community.  In 1975, Elder became the first African American to play in the Masters.  Lee will always be a part of the history of the RUA Celebrity Golf Classic. His presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy will continue to be celebrated.

NEsby Glasgow

Nesby played in nearly every RUA Celebrity Golf Classic ever held.  His passing in February 2020 from stomach cancer is a loss that we still feel.  His infectious smile and big laugh will be sorely missed.

Charles Biggers

Charles Biggers was a devoted friend of Rise Up Academy and a longtime participant in our annual Celebrity Golf Classic. He was someone who showed up year after year, not just to play, but to support the children and the mission.

Charles gave his time, his energy, and his heart to this community, always ready to help and always invested in the people around him. He will be remembered for his loyalty, generosity, and the care he showed to Rise Up Academy and its families.

Lenny Wilkens

Coach Lenny Wilkens was a Hall of Famer, mentor, and longtime supporter of Rise Up Academy. A legendary player and coach, he led the Seattle SuperSonics to their 1979 NBA Championship and dedicated his life to leadership, service, and community impact.

Beyond the game, Lenny was a steady presence and trusted voice of encouragement, always reminding us to care for the children and stay true to the mission. He will be remembered for his humility, wisdom, and the lasting roots he planted in Rise Up Academy and throughout our community.
